T-Shirt Scarf {Guest Blogger}

I’m thrilled to feature my first guest blogger! I have known this fabulous lady for over 23 years. She’s a talented writer and super creative! We have many things in common and people often say we look like twins. Maybe that’s because she’s my sister :)

Read below as Jen walks you through how to make a t-shirt scarf…

Thanks to my dear sister (that’s me!), Pinterest has become one of my favorite time-wasting idea-generating places on the web! One of the first things I pinned was this t-shirt scarf tutorial. Not only could I make a cute scarf, but it didn’t involve sewing (a plus) and I could use some of my old t-shirts (double plus).

It was great motivation to make a quick pass through my closet and pick out a couple old t-shirts that were too short or too stretched out or too haven’t-been-worn-this-decade. I’m not an uber- crafty person, so I was excited to try a DIY project that looked like I could actually accomplish it!

I gathered the supplies (t-shirts, scissors and ruler) and went to work. I used four different colored shirts that I thought went together well for the scarf, plus I found an old brown shirt with a funky lace collar that I used for the “connector pieces.” (We’ll get to that later.)

First I cut off the hem of each of the shirts. Then I cut the body of the shirts into 3/4 inch wide strips.

I cut eight strips from each shirt, so I had 32 strips total (like the tutorial suggested). If you wanted a shorter scarf, you wouldn’t need quite as many strips. (A cool red ruler with your name in white-out from junior high isn’t necessary to measure the strips, but I highly recommend it.)

Once you have all the strips cut out, stretch each t-shirt loop (you won’t need to pull very hard).

Then wrap the stretched-out loops around your hand five times – this will make the “rings” of the scarf. (Depending on the size and stretchiness of the shirts you’re using, you may want to wrap the loops around more/less than five times to get the size of “rings” you like.) I got a little carried away taking pictures of all the colored rings, but they were so pretty!

Once you have all the rings ready to go, find those hems you cut off at the beginning of the process and cut them into 5-inch pieces. This is what you will use to tie together all the rings. I decided to use the lace collar from that brown shirt I found in my closet. I didn’t have enough lace to use for all of the loops, so I alternated between plain brown strips and the brown lace strips. Fancy, I know.

Keep tying together all the rings and watch your scarf grow….I was pretty giddy at this point!

Once all the rings are connected, your scarf is complete! You can leave the ends disconnected and have your traditional long scarf, or attach the two ends for an infinity scarf. And the great thing about this is you don’t have to pick between one or the other….wear it as an infinity scarf one day, and untie one of the connectors and wear it as a long scarf the next day. That’s what I call versatile!

There’s no limit to the color combinations you can come up with….I’m thinking a scarlet and grey Ohio State scarf is next for me!

  1. I LOVE my black and gold t-shirt scarf that Jen made for me! And even though she explained how she made it, I never quite got it until I found this post. So cool!
